Mission Trip wrap-up
Avis Goodheart and Betty Bartholomew finished their trip to Kenya with a flurry of activity; they popped popcorn for all the kids as a special treat alongside suckers and juice!
They took some special time to show love to the bigger girls: giving them gifts of jewelry trinkets, and teaching them how to french braid.
Then it was time for a special good-bye!

Needs met and new requests
All 4 requests from last month were fulfilled! Thank you!!!
1. The solar power system was fixed after the power surge that left the compound without electricity for many days, while Avis and Betty were in Kenya. The system should now be protected from such a future event.
2. Avis and Betty took all the kids swimming. It’s been over a year since their other pool day!
3. The mattress covers were purchased and placed on the beds. Avis and Betty noticed this was needed due to various kids wetting the beds.
4. New shoes were bought for those that needed them, as highlighted in the last letter. In addition, it was noticed that most had no towels or washcloths, some had no toothbrushes, and some had only 1 underwear; so those important items were purchased for specific children.
New requests this month:
1. Send a child a new bedding set for $10 or a whole new set-up for $48 (mattress $38, blanket $6, sheets $4). What a nice Christmas gift that could be! Our total request for mattresses, sheets, and blankets desired is $1840; or $288 all sheets, $396 all blankets, $1155 mattresses.
2. Rebuild the garage for $1200 USD. The sheet metal and wooden pole garage collapsed in high winds. This image shows the materials from the garage after the destruction.
3. We would love any giving for CHRISTMAS FUN (a special meal, perhaps a dessert or candy, possibly a bounce house rental), and to pay January school term fees estimated $5000.
Self-sufficiency updates
-One system we implemented this year toward self-sufficiency is the drinking water system. We are happy to report: IT IS WORKING. The kids are now using the rainwater collected and filtered onsite vs. purchasing drinking water. The tanks are full and everything should continue to run smoothly until the dry season next year. We may need to add 2-3 more tanks to have capacity to hold over the approx. 3 month dry season and will review costs to expand this effort.
-The gas station/convenience store are businesses that move us towards self-sufficiency by generating profits to offset ongoing costs; plus offer a place for teens to gain skills. One improvement made during the mission trip was investing in plastic products that have a higher profit margin than some of the other inventory. Our oversight team will review sales in January.
>Our long-term vision is not only to “give a hand out” to orphans and abandoned kids, but also to prepare them for a successful adult life. We build systems and businesses to “give a hand up” to those we support; and do our best to provide education for future jobs.
