1. Safe Arrival in Kenya
We are grateful to report that Avis Goodhart and Betty Bartholomew have safely arrived in Kenya! Just a week before their departure, there was significant uncertainty about their travel route due to airspace closures following bombing activity in Iran. Their connecting flight passed through the Middle East, and we weren’t sure they would be able to go. Thankfully, the airspace reopened in time, and they made their journey without disruption. Adding to the concern, there have been large-scale protests in Nairobi, but they were able to pass through safely and are now in Kendu Bay. We thank God for His protection over each step of their journey.

Also, a huge thanks to YOU supporters, for filling the Amazon wish list items before their trip! Their bags were full of items they’ll be gifting to the children.
2. Outreach in Mathini
Before heading to Kendu Bay, Betty, Avis, Washington, and some Kenyan Christians spent time ministering in Mathini, a deeply impoverished region near the Somalia border. They were invited to share the Word with people who are just getting to know about God. The church has no building—just a tarp stretched overhead with a shade tree, a few plastic chairs, and many people who stand during the service. The team preached, taught, and distributed bags of rice, sugar, and cooking oil to about 100 families, with enough to feed them for at least a day. Each child received a pack of cookies—a rare and delightful treat! During the ministry time there, they believe at least one person gave their life to Christ, and one blind woman began to regain her sight and make out shapes and forms. Praise God!

3. Supplying Essentials
Back in Nairobi after the outreach, Betty and Avis purchased much-needed items for the children at the orphanage, thanks to your generous donations gathered over recent months. They bought large cooking pots, basins for laundry and bathing, new mattresses, plastic chairs, blankets, sheets, storage trunks, towels and washcloths. We realized we desire more dining tables, so all the children can sit at the same time for meals or study. We intend to purchase supplies for dining tables to be constructed on-site during this trip as well.

Storage Trunks: each child can hold their own things.
4. Intentional Time with the Children
Once settled in Kendu Bay, Betty and Avis are planning small group meals with six to eight kids at a time. These gatherings will offer a chance for the kids to share about their lives, dreams, and interests. During the meals, they’ll also be introduced to using a knife and fork—an uncommon practice where eating with hands is the norm. These lessons are not just about manners but about preparing the children for their future.
5. Listening, Learning, and Leading
The remainder of Betty and Avis’s time in Kenya will be packed with purposeful visits and important conversations. They plan to meet one-on-one with each child aged 12 and older to talk about school performance, interests, and potential career paths. They will also visit each of the apprenticeship locations, the local primary and upper (high) schools, and check in with every volunteer to understand their roles and time commitments. A full review of the farm operations, as well as the gas station and convenience store business, is also planned. Their departure is scheduled for August 26, and we look forward to sharing what they accomplish!
One other follow up from the last letter is to let you know Betty did succeed in transferring funds again to Kenya through Western Union after managing their fraud concerns.
None of this work would be possible without your prayers, generosity, and encouragement. From a new mattress delivered to a bunk bed in Kendu Bay, to a dinner conversation that may spark a dream for a child’s future—you are part of it all.
