1. Safe Return to the U.S.
Betty Bartholomew and Avis Goodhart are back in the U.S. after a fruitful time in Kendu Bay, Kenya. They returned tired but happy, grateful for nearly 7 weeks spent loving on the orphaned and abandoned kids in our care! Washington continues to lead faithfully as Director and see precious young lives changed.

2. Special Meals with the Children
One of the highlights during their mission trip was hosting small group meals with the children, for about eight to ten kids at a time. Betty and Avis cooked dinner and set a table with things like salt and pepper and butter and the table settings. The kids said they had only seen such a thing in a movie! Wow! This was a definite God-idea because of how meaningful and impactful these meals became. Not only was there an opportunity to work on table manners using forks and knives and napkins, but also dedicated time to talk one on one about their life, interests, and hopes and dreams. Making a large, special, family meal multiple times a week for a few weeks did require extra expense and quite a lot of work for Avis and Betty, yet the meals were one of the most profound and impactful times of the mission. What a great reminder that every number has a name, every name has a story, and every story matters to God!

3. Education Plans and School Visits
Betty and Avis spent time individually with older children, discussing school progress and dreams. They clarified plans for each young person “aging out” of our care. Two of the boys finishing high school in November have asked to stay on while they apply for college and government grants for college; and we agreed they can work the farm and help younger kids during a transition period.

Two young ladies finishing sewing apprenticeships in October have asked to stay on until they turn 18; and we have agreed they may stay PLUS utilize our sewing machines to start making the kids’ school uniforms, not only to save money but also to get more practice. We are delighted for them, and eager to see if the two of them might even move together to, and work from, one of our commercial buildings near the gas station. Please pray for them!
Visiting several of our kids’ schools, including boarding schools, helped understand the learning environments, which will inform our guidance on best paths for kiddos.

4. Joyful Days of Celebration
Before leaving, the children honored them with poems, songs, drawings, and speeches thanking ALL OUR donors and praising God! Everyone celebrated with fruit punch and cookies. Some of the speeches mentioned the deeply moving family dinners they had enjoyed.

On other special days, Betty and Avis had the pleasure of giving out the toys we sent, plus every child enjoyed a rare treat of a soda and an ice cream. Still on other days, they got each child an orange to try, and another time tried watermelon.

5. Mosquito Nets and more to come
With malaria a constant threat, mosquito nets were added to every bunk bed. Although the buildings were designed to minimize this risk, malaria continues to be a serious concern in the area, and various children of ours have fallen ill over the years.

We look forward to sharing even more photos and details from the mission in our next newsletter because there was so much from the 7 week trip.
– Two notes: each child received new shoes, and many new mattresses were purchased!

Every meal, school tuition, mattress and mosquito net, pair of shoes, is possible through your generosity.Thank you for your prayers and support!
