1. It’s all about the kids
Please enjoy the above photo of the kids listening to Bible stories as they are taught God’s Word. We pray each one grows in their faith during their time with us … this is what it’s all about!
We are thankful the flu-like illnesses we shared about in our last newsletter have mostly passed, and the children have generally recovered. Three kids experienced strong malaria this past month, and are still recovering from that as well. Please pray for our kids’ protection; and especially for one of our girls who was struck by a motorbike this month while walking home from school. We are grateful she is recovering and returned home.
2. August Mission Trip Update
Betty, Avis, and a new volunteer, Cricket, will travel to Kenya July 28 to September 1. Cricket met Avis about two years ago in Springfield, Missouri. Cricket is recently retired and eager to serve in missions… we are excited! [Pictured from left is Cricket, Avis, and Betty.]
Once again, there will be small-group family-style dinners with kids during this mission trip. A generous donor provided the funds needed for these special meals, the extra food and supplies. The dinners allow the mission team to spend meaningful one-on-one time with the kiddos. They are encouraging them, talking about school and future goals, and sharing the experience of a family-style meal while teaching life skills including table manners and conversation.
3. Planning for the Future
The team will spend time during this trip evaluating the future of the gas station and convenience store, which remain closed since the passing of the security guard several months ago. They will also discuss possible uses for the three commercial buildings, which have yet to be fully utilized. Please pray for wisdom as we seek the best long-term use of these assets, whether through reopening, renting, selling, or another opportunity that supports the ministry.
4. Other Updates
Our children continue learning the value of caring for the home God has provided for them. You’ll see teens are helping repaint bed frames and windows to maintain the property and resources entrusted to them.
We have shared previously about the possibility of starting a school at or near the children’s home, and continue discussing this with Washington and Teresa regarding potential benefits for the children. As we move forward, we are considering the ownership to ensure all charitable funds entrusted to Go Ye and Horizons Foundation remain dedicated to the ministry. It may be that Washington and Teresa establish and operate a school privately on land they purchased adjacent to the children’s home. Then, our ministry would pay tuition for our children in lieu of paying the more distant schools they currently attend. This could provide a safer, higher-quality education while maintaining clear stewardship of the charitable resources entrusted to us.
